Internship in Science Teaching (EDTE 71,72,73)
Internship in Science Teaching is a series of courses designed to enhance your preparation for the teacher credential program and a career in teaching. It also serves as an excellent course for those who are preparing for a career in the medical field and would like gain experience learning how to effectively teach children.
The courses will provide an opportunity to:
1. Learn effective strategies for teaching science.
2. Gain valuable experience teaching small groups of elementary and middle school
students in the Hands-on Science Education Laboratory facility at Shasta College.
3. Design hands-on science labs to enrich the conceptual understanding of your students.
4. Acquire a number of great science learning activities that you will be able to use in your
future classroom
Course Description:
EDTE 71, 72 and 73 is a series of courses focused on current teaching methods for life science, physical science, and earth science, respectively. It is designed to give students the opportunity to work with elementary and middle school students in a science teaching/learning environment in the Hands-on Science Education Laboratory facility on the Shasta College campus. The hands-on lessons provide early teaching experience in science for undergraduates exploring teaching as a career. All lessons are based on the California content standards in science. Students cover instructional strategies as well as content as part of the two-hour teaching and one-hour follow-up laboratory experience.
EDTE 71, 72, and 73 are 9 week courses each worth 0.5 units. EDTE can be found in the college catalog under “Education – Teacher Education”

What can you do with these units?
- Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Liberal Studies. The combination of any two courses (1 unit total) will transfer to California State University, Chico and count for NSCI 489A (Internship in Science Teaching), which is required for those working towards a BA in Liberal Studies.
- Associate of Arts (AA) degree in University Studies with an emphasis in Liberal Studies – Elementary Teacher Prep.
