Selected Talks for Physiology
"Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use." ~Earl Nightingale
"Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration. Accordingly, a 'genius' is often merely a talented person who has done all of his or her homework." ~ Thomas Edison
The following links are selected talks, videos, and articles that expand the topics discussed in lecture. The information presented are from leading experts in their respective fields and will provide insight as to future directions and treatments of various conditions. As a medical professional it will be vital for you to keep up on new developments in medicine in order to provide top quality care to you patients.
Cancer
William Li: Can we eat to starve cancer? William Li presents a new way to think about treating cancer and other diseases: anti-angiogenesis, preventing the growth of blood vessels that feed a tumor. The crucial first (and best) step: Eating cancer-fighting foods that cut off the supply lines and beat cancer at its own game.
Genetics
RNAi. Nova Video. RNA is now at the heart of a scientific and medical revolution. It has led scientists to what may be the most important advance in biology in decades. Through a process known as RNAi (the "i" is for interference), researchers have a new way to shut off specific genes, yielding insights into the human genome as well as providing potential treatments for a wide range of diseases.
Epigenetics Nova Video. Once nurture seemed clearly distinct from nature. Now it appears that our diets and lifestyles can change the expression of our genes. How? By influencing a network of chemical switches within our cells collectively known as the epigenome.
DNA Is Not Destiny: Epigenetics. Discover Magazine article. The new science of epigenetics rewrites the rules of disease, heredity, and identity. This article looks at what epigenetics is and the research that supports its discovery.
Stem Cells
Stem Cells: Early Research. NOVA Video that explores the promise and potential of the emerging field of stem cell research, as well as the maelstrom of emotion and politics that engulfs it. Medical researchers see stem cells as a new way of investigating diseases such as diabetes and Parkinson’s—and of treating them. But from the start, the field is torn by ethical controversy.
Stem Cells Breakthrough. NOVA Video explores a potentially revolutionary development. Researchers discovered how to take ordinary skin cells from an adult mouse, turn back their genetic clock, and transform them into the equivalent of embryonic stem cells. The cells are called Induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cells. Biomedical researchers can now create human iPS cells without using human embryos, thus bypassing a political and ethical stumbling block that has hampered stem cell research.
Stem Cell Basics. Video describing the basics of stem cells
The Physiology of Aging
Decoding Immortality. Smithsonian Channel Video. It's a discovery for the ages... or at least the aging process. Meet the woman behind the amazing scientific breakthrough that may put immortality within our grasp. The story of telomeres.
Can We Live Forever? Nova Video. Feturing information on artificial organs, suspended animation, genes that impact aging, and lifelike avatars.
Heart - Artificial and Transplants
Artificial Heart That Does Not Beat. TedMed Talk. Dr. Bud Frazier and Dr. Billy Cohn at the Texas Heart Institute have developed a machine that can replace the heart and move the persons blood without actually pumping the blood in the traditional sense.
Body Story - Cholesterol Time Bomb Video of the stages of a heart attack, from the rupture of a coronary plaque, to dissolving the resulting clot, to ventricular defibrillation, to recovery.
Organ Regeneration
PBS Nova, Artificial Organ Regrowth a Reality An amazing look at organ regeneration.
Can We Live Forever? Nova Video. Featuring information on artificial organs, suspended animation, genes that impact aging, and lifelike avatars.
Anthony Atala: Growing new organs. Anthony Atala's state-of-the-art lab grows human organs -- from muscles to blood vessels to bladders, and more. At TEDMED, he shows footage of his bio-engineers working with some of its sci-fi gizmos, including an oven-like bioreactor (preheat to 98.6 F) and a machine that "prints" human tissue.
Alan Russell: The potential of regenerative medicine. Alan Russell studies regenerative medicine -- a breakthrough way of thinking about disease and injury, using a process that can signal the body to rebuild itself.
Nervous System
TEDMED, One more reason to get a good nights sleep, Importance of CSF. A look at a critical function of the brain during sleep, a natural cleansing system that keeps toxic proteins at bay.
Myelin Development in the Brain ABC Nightline. A look at the way science is discovering how practice leads to success. Reprogramming your brain - it combines the body and mind to accomplish a task.
Dr. Terry Wahls - Minding Your Mitochondria. Multiple Sclerosis Dr. Terry Wahls learned how to properly fuel her body. Using the lessons she learned at the subcellular level, she used diet to cure her MS and get out of her wheelchair. Note: This talk is a personal narrative and is not yet backed by larger experimentation.
